The History of Universal Studios Florida: A Journey into the Movies

Explore Universal Studios Florida.

Universal Studios Florida, which opened its doors on June 7, 1990, is a landmark in the world of theme parks. Located in Orlando, Florida, Universal conceived it as a park that would blend the magic of Hollywood with immersive attractions. Its original vision imagined a theme park that could function as a working film production studio.

Origins and Vision

The concept of Universal Studios Florida was born in the 1980s, inspired by the success of Universal Studios Hollywood. The Hollywood park’s behind-the-scenes studio tours had grown into a popular tourist attraction. Universal saw an opportunity to expand this concept into a full-fledged theme park. Unlike Hollywood, however, the Florida park would focus on rides and attractions based on Universal’s films, rather than studio tours.

The goal was ambitious: to create a park where guests could “ride the movies.” Universal partnered with Steven Spielberg, one of the most iconic filmmakers of the era, to develop several attractions.

Spielberg’s creative input helped shape the park’s identity, emphasizing the fusion of storytelling and cutting-edge technology. Spielberg also envisioned a functioning movie and tv production studio, complete with sound stages. Each world within Universal Studios Florida can and has functioned as a production set.

Opening and Early Attractions

When Universal Studios Florida opened on June 7, 1990, it aimed to provide guests with an immersive experience that brought movies and television to life. The park’s original lineup featured a mix of rides, shows, and behind-the-scenes experiences. Many of these heavily focused on practical effects and special effects demonstrations.

Jaws

A thrilling boat ride through Amity Harbor, where guests encountered a giant animatronic shark, based on Steven Spielberg’s 1975 film. The ride faced technical difficulties at launch and closed temporarily for major refurbishments before reopening in 1993.

Kongfrontation

A tram-based dark ride that took guests through New York City, where they encountered a massive animatronic King Kong attacking their vehicle. This attraction was one of the park’s most ambitious rides but closed in 2002 to make way for Revenge of the Mummy.

Earthquake: The Big One

A special effects attraction where guests boarded a subway train and experienced an 8.3 magnitude earthquake. The ride featured collapsing structures, explosions, and a flood of water. The attraction was later rebranded as Disaster! A Major Motion Picture Ride… Starring You before closing in 2015.

E.T. Adventure

A dark ride where guests ride flying bicycles through scenes from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, helping the beloved alien return to his home planet. This is the only opening-day attraction still in operation today.

Back to the Future: The Ride

A motion simulator ride where guests joined Doc Brown on a time-traveling adventure to stop Biff Tannen. This attraction was groundbreaking at the time and was later replaced by the Simpsons Ride in 2008.

The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera

A motion simulator ride where guests traveled through animated worlds to rescue Yogi Bear and Boo-Boo from Dick Dastardly and Muttley. This attraction was replaced by Jimmy Neutron’s Nicktoon Blast (2003) and later Despicable Me Minion Mayhem (2012).

Alfred Hitchcock: The Art of Making Movies

A live show and exhibit dedicated to the works of Alfred Hitchcock, featuring recreations of scenes from Psycho and The Birds. Guests even got to experience a 3D version of The Birds. This attraction closed in 2003 and was replaced by Shrek 4D.

Murder, She Wrote Mystery Theater

A walkthrough interactive show where guests could see the behind-the-scenes process of making a mystery television show. It was based on the long-running TV series Murder, She Wrote. The experience was later replaced by Hercules & Xena: Wizards of the Screen.

Nickelodeon Studios

A working television production studio where guests could tour the sets of popular Nickelodeon shows, watch live tapings, and even participate in game shows like Double Dare. The studio closed in 2005, and the Blue Man Group Theatre (now closed) occupies the space.

Universal Studios Production Tour

A tram tour showcasing how movies and television shows were made at Universal Studios Florida. It featured behind-the-scenes looks at real production sets. Universal eventually phased out this attraction as the park shifted toward ride-based experiences.

Initial Struggles and Competition with Walt Disney World

When Universal Studios Florida opened in 1990, it entered a market dominated by Walt Disney World, which had already been established for nearly two decades. At the time, Disney controlled much of Orlando’s tourism industry with its Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and Disney-MGM Studios (now Disney’s Hollywood Studios).

Universal aimed to compete directly with Disney-MGM Studios by offering a movie-making experience that featured behind-the-scenes attractions and rides based on blockbuster films.

However, challenges plagued the park’s early years. Technical issues abounded, particularly with Jaws and Kongfrontation, which suffered frequent breakdowns. Back to the Future: The Ride was supposed to debut with the park’s opening, but instead opened a year later.

This led to negative guest experiences and initial skepticism about Universal’s ability to compete with Disney.

Despite these early struggles, Universal began gaining ground by offering a theme park experience that focused on thrill rides, advanced special effects, and more intense storytelling. Unlike Disney’s family-friendly image, Universal embraced edgier franchises and action-packed attractions, appealing to older kids, teens, and adults.

As the 1990s progressed, Universal expanded with Islands of Adventure in 1999, introducing more thrill-based experiences. Disney continued to grow with the opening of Animal Kingdom in 1998. The rivalry intensified in the 2010s when Universal revolutionized the industry with The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. It forced Disney to respond with Pandora – The World of Avatar (2017) and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge (2019).

The competition between the two resorts has fueled a theme park arms race. Both companies are constantly innovating and expanding to attract guests from around the world.

Growth and Transformation

By the mid-1990s, Universal Studios Florida had found its footing. The park introduced new attractions that kept the experience fresh and aligned with contemporary pop culture. One of the most significant additions was Terminator 2: 3D, which debuted in 1996. This groundbreaking attraction combined live actors with 3D film technology, setting a new standard for immersive entertainment.

Another pivotal moment came in 1999, with the addition of the Woody Woodpecker’s KidZone, an area designed for younger visitors. Featuring attractions like the Curious George Goes to Town play area and Fievel’s Playland, it diversified the park’s appeal and solidified its family-friendly reputation.

The Evolution of Universal Studios Florida

Over the years, Universal Studios Florida has shifted away from its studio-based origins. It has instead evolved into a thrill-heavy, IP-driven theme park filled with cutting-edge attractions based on blockbuster franchises.

Many of the original rides have been replaced by high-tech simulators, rollercoasters, and fully immersive themed lands. For example, Kongfrontation gave way to Revenge of the Mummy, a high-speed indoor coaster. Back to the Future: The Ride was replaced by The Simpsons Ride. The former Disaster! attraction, once an earthquake simulation, became Fast & Furious – Supercharged, (a serious downgrade, frankly).

Perhaps the most significant transformation came with The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley (2014). It replaced Jaws and turned Universal Studios Florida into a must-visit destination for immersive storytelling. Today, the park is home to blockbuster attractions like Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, Transformers: The Ride 3D, and Despicable Me Minion Mayhem. These attractions mark a dramatic shift from its early days as a behind-the-scenes studio experience to a full-fledged immersive theme park.

Islands of Adventure

The History of Islands of Adventure: A Park Built for Adventure

Explore Islands of Adventure.

Islands of Adventure, which opened on May 28, 1999, is a cornerstone of Universal Orlando Resort and a marvel of modern theme park design. Created as Universal’s first major expansion in Orlando, Universal designed the park to offer a bold, innovative take on themed entertainment.

Unlike Universal Studios Florida, which focuses on immersing guests in the world of movies, Universal built Islands of Adventure to transport visitors into fantastical realms inspired by literature, mythology, and imagination.

Origins and Vision

The idea for Islands of Adventure began to take shape in the early 1990s. Universal sought to expand its presence in Orlando and directly compete with the immersive theming and innovation of Walt Disney World. Instead of creating another park centered on film-based attractions, Universal envisioned a completely different experience. One that would bring to life the timeless stories and myths that have captivated audiences for generations.

The name “Islands of Adventure” reflects the park’s unique structure. Unlike the hub-and-spoke layout popularized by Disney parks, Islands of Adventure features a circular design where themed “islands” surround a central lagoon. Each island would represent a distinct world, offering highly immersive environments.

Construction and Themed Islands

Construction on the park began in the mid-1990s. Universal partnered with industry leaders in design and engineering to bring its ambitious vision to life. The initial lineup of themed islands included:

Port of Entry

The park’s entry area, styled as a bustling exotic marketplace. Though not a ride-heavy area, it set the tone for adventure and featured the park’s symbol, an iconic lighthouse.

Marvel Super Hero Island

A vibrant, comic book-inspired land featuring attractions based on Marvel superheroes. Its standout ride, The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, combined 3D animation, practical effects, and groundbreaking motion-based technology.

Toon Lagoon

A whimsical area based on classic cartoon strips like Popeye and Dudley Do-Right. It emphasized water rides, including Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges and Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls.

Jurassic Park

Modeled after the iconic franchise, this island brought guests face-to-face with dinosaurs. Its signature attraction, Jurassic Park River Adventure, is a thrilling boat ride with a climactic encounter with a T. Rex.

The Lost Continent

A land inspired by mythology and ancient legends. It offered elaborate theming and shows such as Poseidon’s Fury and the Dueling Dragons rollercoasters (later re-themed to work in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter as the Dragon Challenge).

Seuss Landing

A family-friendly island based on the works of Dr. Seuss. It features colorful attractions like The Cat in the Hat and One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.

Universal designed each island with meticulous attention to detail. It succeeded in creating immersive environments that stood out from other theme parks of the era.

Opening and Reception

Islands of Adventure officially opened to the public on May 28, 1999. It was part of a larger expansion that transformed Universal Studios Florida into Universal Orlando Resort. While critics and guests praised the park for its innovative attractions and theming, initial attendance fell short of expectations. Marketing challenges, combined with competition from Disney’s Animal Kingdom, which had opened the previous year, contributed to the slow start.

However, critical acclaim for groundbreaking rides like The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man established Islands of Adventure as a must-visit destination. The park’s reputation grew through word of mouth and increased marketing efforts.

The Evolution of Islands of Adventure

RELATED: Check out the best and worst current attractions at Islands of Adventure in our ultimate ride ranking.

Over the years, Islands of Adventure has undergone significant changes. The most transformative moment came in 2010 with the opening of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade. The first Wizarding World replaced the Lost Continent’s Merlinwood area. This highly immersive land featured Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. It was a groundbreaking ride that blended robotics, screens, and practical effects.

The addition of Harry Potter not only reinvigorated Islands of Adventure but also redefined themed entertainment. It became a massive draw for fans of the franchise. This lead to a surge in attendance and sparked similar immersive expansions at other parks worldwide.

Other notable updates include re-theming Dueling Dragons to Dragon Challenge (which would later be replaced by Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure in 2019), and continuing the evolution of Jurassic Park by adding Jurassic World VelociCoaster in 2021.

The Evolution of Universal CityWalk Orlando

Explore Universal CityWalk Orlando.

Universal CityWalk Orlando opened in 1999 as part of Universal Orlando Resort’s first major expansion. It coincided with the debut of Islands of Adventure and the transformation of Universal Orlando into a multi-park, entertainment, dining, and on-site hotel resort destination.

Inspired by the success of CityWalk Hollywood, which opened in 1993, Universal sought to create a vibrant entertainment district that would serve as a gateway to its theme parks. But it also envisioned a standalone nightlife and dining hub. Designed to compete with Disney Springs (formerly Downtown Disney), Universal built CityWalk Orlando to offer guests a mix of restaurants, shops, clubs, and entertainment venues, providing a lively atmosphere both day and night.

Initially, CityWalk featured a variety of dining and entertainment options, including the iconic Hard Rock Cafe, which remains a staple of the district today. Other early venues included Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, Bob Marley – A Tribute to Freedom, and the AMC Universal Cineplex. Over the years, CityWalk has undergone multiple renovations and additions. Popular eateries like Voodoo Doughnut, The Toothsome Chocolate Emporium and Savory Feast Kitchen, and Bigfire have modernized its line-up.

Today, CityWalk serves as the central hub of Universal Orlando. It connects both theme parks and provides free evening entertainment for guests looking to extend their experience beyond the rides.

The Evolution of On-Site Hotels at Universal Orlando Resort

Universal Orlando Resort’s on-site hotel offerings have undergone significant growth and transformation since the opening of Loews Portofino Bay Hotel in 1999. The resort now offers a variety of accommodations that cater to different guest preferences, from budget to luxury.

Three (3) of the current on-site hotels opened within four (4) years of each other at the inception of Universal Orlando Resort in 1999. After resting on their laurels for over a decade, the resort has added roughly one (1) on-site hotel every two (2) years since the 2014 opening of Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort. And the resort will add three (3) new on-site hotels in 2025.

The evolution of these hotels reflects the resort’s expansion, as well as its goal to provide unique theming, exclusive guest benefits, and enhanced convenience for visitors.

Loews Portofino Bay Hotel

Loews Portofino Bay Hotel (opened September 1999)

Since its opening in September 1999, Loews Portofino Bay has been a flagship hotel at Universal Orlando Resort. Inspired by the Italian seaside village of Portofino, the hotel features Mediterranean-style architecture, cobblestone streets, and scenic waterfront views. Portofino Bay has been a central part of Universal’s strategy to create a luxury resort atmosphere that caters to higher-end guests while also providing exclusive theme park benefits.

When Portofino Bay Hotel first opened, it introduced opulent accommodations, lavish gardens, and an Italianate design. This created a romantic and relaxing atmosphere that was a departure from the typical theme park hotels. It even hosted gondola rides, which have—unfortunately—been phased out.

Today Loews Portofino Bay guests appreciate its upscale amenities, including fine dining options, a full-service spa, and a variety of exclusive theme park perks, such the complimentary Universal Express Pass Unlimited and Early Park Admission. Portofino Bay opened in 1999 as part of the Islands of Adventure and CityWalk expansion and helped create the initial transformation from Universal Studios Florida to Universal Orlando Resort.

Hard Rock Hotel Orlando (opened March 2001)

Hard Rock Hotel Orlando was the second on-site hotel to open at Universal Orlando Resort, following the success of Portofino Bay Hotel. The hotel’s design centers around rock music, with décor and themes heavily inspired by classic rock icons.

The hotel features over 1,000 pieces of music memorabilia, including guitars, costumes, and handwritten lyrics from famous rock stars. Since its opening in March 2001, Hard Rock Hotel Orlando has been a defining part of the resort’s luxury hotel offerings. It attracts guests who appreciate both rock ‘n’ roll culture and unmatched convenience. The hotel’s bold and colorful interior and high-end accommodations make it a unique destination for guests looking for a luxury experience with a rock-and-roll flair.

The most significant expansion to Hard Rock Hotel Orlando was the creation of the signature pool area, a large sand-bottom pool that features underwater speakers and a rock ‘n’ roll theme. The pool quickly became one of the hotel’s main attractions, providing guests with a vibrant, laid-back spot to enjoy the Florida sun.

Today, Hard Rock Hotel Orlando continues to be a cornerstone of Universal Orlando’s premium accommodations. The hotel is well-known for being within walking distance of Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, providing guests with convenient access to the parks along with exclusive theme park benefits like Early Park Admission, complimentary Universal Express Pass Unlimited access, and water taxi service to the theme parks.

Loews Royal Pacific Resort (opened June 2002)

Since its opening in June 2002, Loews Royal Pacific Resort has provided guests with an upscale, tropical South Pacific-inspired experience. The hotel offers a luxurious escape with proximity to the theme parks. As Universal Orlando’s third on-site hotel, Royal Pacific Resort quickly became a signature property, known for its lush landscaping, exotic design, and exclusive amenities.

Today, Royal Pacific Resort continues to be one of the top luxury hotels at Universal Orlando, providing a relaxed South Pacific escape.  Guests love Royal Pacific for its convenient location, just a short walk or water taxi ride from Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. The hotel’s signature offerings, such as Early Park Admission, Universal Express Unlimited, and the luau-style dinner show, continue to make it a popular choice for guests looking for both relaxation and adventure.

Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort (opened March 2014)

Since its opening in March 2014, Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort has become one of the most beloved and affordable options for guests at Universal Orlando Resort.

At its inception, the focus was on providing affordable, spacious rooms, ideal for families and groups. The room options include both standard rooms and family suites.

Universal designed this retro-style hotel to evoke the nostalgic feel of the 1950s and 1960s. It combines a mid-century modern aesthetic with family-friendly amenities and affordable accommodations.

Designed with vibrant colors, bold patterns, and vintage touches, the resort harkens back to the days of classic American motels. It features art deco-inspired décor, retro furniture, and iconic styling reminiscent of mid-century beach culture. Cabana Bay welcomes guests into a large, colorful lobby featuring art-deco-inspired chandeliers, sleek, rounded furniture, and checkerboard flooring, making it feel like stepping into a vintage beachside resort.

As its fourth on-site hotel, Cabana Bay marked a major shift in Universal Orlando’s hotel offerings by providing a more budget-conscious option.

Today, Cabana Bay Beach Resort remains one of Universal Orlando’s most popular value hotels. It’s known for offering a fun and affordable stay with convenient access to the theme parks via shuttle buses or a quick walk. It is one of the most accessible hotels for guests who want to enjoy the park experience without breaking the bank.

Loews Sapphire Falls Resort (opened July 2016)

When Loews Sapphire Falls Resort opened in 2016, it introduced a fresh Caribbean theme to Universal Orlando’s roster of hotels. Universal drew inspiration from the tropical islands of the Caribbean. The hotel features vibrant, brightly colored architecture, lush palm trees, and its signature blue lagoon-style pool with a large, cascading waterfall.

The hotel’s design also incorporated a distinctive central courtyard and a pathway along the water. It allows guests to enjoy a leisurely walk to Universal’s theme parks or take advantage of the convenient water taxi service.

As the hotel market at Universal Orlando expanded, Universal strategically positioned Sapphire Falls to offer guests a slightly more affordable alternative to the resort’s higher-end properties, such as Loews Portofino Bay Hotel and Hard Rock Hotel, without sacrificing quality or convenience.

Open for just under a decade, today Loews Sapphire Falls Resort has evolved into one of Universal Orlando’s most popular mid-to-upscale hotels. It balances luxury and value with its Caribbean-inspired decor and exclusive theme park benefits.

Universal’s Endless Summer Resorts – Surfside Inn and Suites (opened June 2019) and Dockside Inn and Suites (opened March 2020)

Since the opening of Universal’s Endless Summer Resort – Surfside Inn and Suites in June 2019, and Universal’s Endless Summer Resort – Dockside Inn and Suites in March 2020, Universal Orlando Resort has expanded its portfolio of value-oriented hotels aimed at providing affordable, family-friendly accommodations with the convenience of staying on-site.

Universal designed these resorts with a beach-themed ambiance, offering a laid-back vibe and a variety of recreational amenities. The resorts appeal to guests seeking an economical yet high-quality stay near Universal’s theme parks. The Endless Summer Resorts represent a more budget-conscious option for families, couples, and larger groups while maintaining proximity to the parks.

Surfside Inn and Suites, the first to open, provides a blend of standard hotel rooms and family suites. It was designed to offer more flexible options for families and large groups. Its theme emphasizes the beach vibe. Its open, airy lobbies and tropical landscape provide guests with a relaxing, vacation-like experience without the higher costs typically associated with resort-style hotels.

Dockside Inn and Suites opened the following year. It continued the coastal theme but introduced larger accommodations. This included even more family suites that can accommodate up to six people, making it an especially popular choice for larger families and groups. Its design reflects a beachside retreat with features such as palm trees, water features, and colorful accents that highlight the hotel’s seaside charm.

The Endless Summer Resorts continue to provide guests with the perfect balance of affordability, convenience, and fun. With their focus on family-friendly accommodations, vibrant beach theming, and unique amenities, Surfside and Dockside Inn and Suites attract guests who want a more affordable on-site hotel experience without compromising on quality or service.

The Impact of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter (2010, 2014)

In 2010, Islands of Aventure opened The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade. It was a turning point for Universal Orlando Resort and the theme park industry as a whole. Before its debut, theme park goers generally saw Universal as a secondary destination compared to Walt Disney World. The introduction of this immersive land changed that perception.

With highly detailed environments, authentic theming, and attractions like Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter set a new standard for themed entertainment. The land’s massive success led to record-breaking attendance increases. And it forced Disney and other competitors to rethink their approach to intellectual property-based lands. In 2014, Universal doubled down on its success and opened The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida. This only further solidified its dominance in immersive storytelling.

The success of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter reshaped Universal Orlando’s identity. It transformed it into a multi-day vacation destination rather than just a day-trip alternative to Disney. The introduction of the Hogwarts Express, which connects the two lands across separate parks, encouraged guests to purchase park-to-park tickets, boosting revenue.

The land’s interactive wands, themed dining experiences, and authentic merchandise set a new industry trend. It inspired Disney to adopt similar strategies for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and Pandora – The World of Avatar.

Beyond Orlando, the Harry Potter expansion led to the creation of similar lands in Universal Studios Hollywood, Japan, and Beijing. These expansions proved the Wizarding World’s global appeal. Ultimately, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter transformed Universal from a Disney competitor into an industry leader. And it paved the way for further expansions, innovations, and the new them park, EPIC Universe.

Volcano Bay Expansion (2017)

Explore Volcano Bay.

Volcano Bay, which opened on May 25, 2017, is Universal Orlando Resort’s third theme park. Its introduction was a trailblazing addition to the water park landscape. Unlike traditional water parks, Universal designed Volcano Bay as a fully immersive water theme park. It combined lush theming, innovative technology, and thrilling attractions to create a tropical paradise.

Origins and Vision

The concept for Volcano Bay emerged in the early 2010s as Universal sought to expand its offerings in Orlando. Universal’s existing water park, Wet ‘n Wild, had been a trailblazer in the industry. But it lacked the cohesive theming and modern innovations that guests had come to expect from leading water parks. Universal decided to close Wet ‘n Wild and replace it with a new, state-of-the-art park that would redefine the water park experience.

Universal envisioned Volcano Bay as more than just a collection of water slides. It would be a fully immersive environment that told a story. Universal’s creative team crafted the myth of the Waturi people, a fictional Polynesian-inspired culture that created the park’s vibrant setting. At the heart of this narrative is Krakatau, the towering 200-foot volcano that serves as the park’s centerpiece.

Construction and Design

Construction of Volcano Bay began in 2015, replacing a section of Universal Orlando’s property previously used for employee parking. Universal employed advanced engineering and theming techniques to make Krakatau, the volcano, a striking visual and functional centerpiece. Krakatau houses several attractions, including the park’s signature ride, Krakatau Aqua Coaster, and a cascading waterfall visible throughout the park.

Universal also sought to innovate beyond theming. One of Volcano Bay’s defining features is its use of technology to enhance the guest experience. The park introduced TapuTapu, a wearable device given to every guest upon entry. TapuTapu allows visitors to virtually queue for rides, activate interactive elements throughout the park, and access lockers.

These seamless features eliminate many of the inconveniences traditionally associated with water parks.

Opening and Attractions

Volcano Bay opened to the public on May 25, 2017. Critics immediately recognized the water park for its ambitious design and innovative features. The park’s attractions are divided among four themed areas that represent the Waturi people’s journey:

Krakatau

The iconic volcano features the Krakatau Aqua Coaster, a thrilling ride that combines water jets and roller coaster technology to send guests through dark twists and turns inside the volcano.

Wave Village

Home to the tranquil Waturi Beach and the Wave Pool. They offer calm waves and a view of Krakatau.

River Village

A family-friendly area housing attractions like Kopiko Wai Winding River and Tot Tiki Reef, a play area for young children.

Rainforest Village

A high-energy area featuring some of the park’s most daring rides. They include the Ko’okiri Body Plunge, a 125-foot near-vertical drop slide, and the Maku Puihi Round Raft Rides, which offer thrilling group experiences.

The park also emphasizes relaxation, offering private cabanas and lounge chairs for guests to unwind between rides.

Despite a few early hurdles, Volcano Bay quickly established itself as one of the premier water parks in the world. Its combination of thrills, theming, and technology set it apart from competitors and redefined expectations for water-based attractions.

The Future of Universal Orlando Resort: EPIC Universe and the South Campus

Explore EPIC Universe.

Universal EPIC Universe, opened May 22, 2025, represents Universal Orlando Resort’s most ambitious theme park project to date. As the fourth park in the Universal Orlando lineup, Universal designed EPIC Universe to redefine immersive entertainment. It would combine cutting-edge technology, highly detailed theming, and storytelling on an unprecedented scale.

RELATED: Click here to check out our ultimate ride ranking of every new EPIC Universe ride.

Origins and Vision

In the mid-2010s, Universal began acquiring land and planning a major expansion to its Orlando property. In 2018, Comcast, Universal’s parent company, revealed its intentions to build a new theme park. This signaled its commitment to investing heavily in its theme park division to compete with Disney and other major players in the industry.

On August 1, 2019, Universal officially announced the development of EPIC Universe. During the announcement, Universal described the park as “the most immersive and innovative theme park” it had ever created. The park would feature unique lands, attractions, and entertainment. It would be located on a 750-acre property several miles south of the existing Universal Orlando Resort. Over time we began to refer to the new property as the “south campus.”

Development Timeline

Construction Begins (2019)

Following the public announcement in 2019, construction on EPIC Universe began in earnest. The park’s layout features a central hub surrounded by several themed lands, each offering unique attractions, dining, and entertainment. This “spoke-and-hub” design marked a departure from Universal’s traditional linear park layouts.

COVID-19 Delays (2020–2021)

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the timeline for EPIC Universe. In April 2020, construction halted as Universal reassessed its financial priorities amid the global crisis. However, by March 2021, Universal resumed construction, reaffirming its commitment to completing the project.

Construction Resumes and Accelerates (2022–2024)

Throughout 2022 and 2023, construction on EPIC Universe progressed rapidly. Key infrastructure, including ride buildings, themed environments, and pathways, began taking shape. Universal also invested in new transportation options. It even explored an extension of the Brightline high-speed rail, to connect EPIC Universe with other parts of Orlando. (Being the Brightline enthusiasts that we are, Universal Unlocked of course loves this little detail.)

Park Design and Attractions

RELATED: Check out our list of every single ride and attraction coming to EPIC Universe.

EPIC Universe’s design revolves around a central hub with individual themed lands branching out from it. These include:

Celestial Park

An otherworldly hub that includes a carousel, dining, and a dueling rollercoasters attraction.

SUPER NINTENDO WORLD

The Importance of Universal Orlando to the Theme Park Industry

Universal Orlando Resort has played a pivotal role in shaping the modern theme park industry. It has pushed innovation, storytelling, and competition to new heights. When Universal Studios Florida first opened in 1990, it introduced a strong focus on movie-based attractions. It immediately challenged Disney’s dominance in Orlando.

The resort continued to evolve, with the introduction of Islands of Adventure in 1999, setting a new standard for immersive, highly themed lands. However, its most significant industry-shifting moment came in 2010 with the debut of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade, which redefined guest expectations for themed entertainment.

The land’s detailed environments, interactive experiences, and groundbreaking rides—such as Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey—led to a new era of story-driven attractions and heavily themed lands across the theme park industry.

Beyond attraction design, Universal Orlando has influenced the industry through technological advancements and guest experience innovations. The introduction of virtual queues, ride-specific lockers, and TapuTapu wearable technology at Volcano Bay showcases Universal’s commitment to reducing wait times and enhancing convenience.

Additionally, Universal’s aggressive expansion strategy, including new hotel developments and EPIC Universe (opened in 2025), has intensified competition with Disney, encouraging both companies to push for continuous improvements.

The resort’s success has also inspired other global theme park operators to prioritize intellectual property-driven attractions, leading to the rise of Super Nintendo World in Japan, Hollywood, and soon in Orlando. Through innovation, competition, and guest-focused improvements, Universal Orlando has helped shape the future of the theme park industry.

These attributes make it one of the most influential entertainment destinations in the world.

Conclusion

Universal Orlando Resort has grown from a single movie-themed park into a world-class vacation destination, continuously evolving to set new standards in the theme park industry.

Through innovative attractions, immersive storytelling, and strategic expansions, it has not only captivated millions of visitors but also challenged competitors to push the boundaries of entertainment. The resort’s ability to blend thrill rides, family-friendly experiences, and cutting-edge technology has made it a leader in the industry, shaping the future of theme parks worldwide.

As Universal Orlando prepares for its next major expansion with EPIC Universe in 2025, its influence on the theme park industry continues to grow. With a focus on guest experience, intellectual property-driven attractions, and new technologies, the resort remains a driving force in entertainment innovation.

Whether through revolutionary lands like The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, high-adrenaline coasters, or unique dining and shopping experiences, Universal Orlando continues to redefine what a modern theme park resort can be. Its lasting impact ensures that it will remain a top destination for theme park enthusiasts for years to come.
